Monica's spent the better part of two decades art directing advertising campaigns as a Creative Director. Each time she commissioned illustrations, she was secretly envious of the artist on the other line getting the chance to make beautiful art for a living. Little by little, she started creating illustrations for a few campaigns, and finally just jumped in feet first.
Monica loves a good visual mash-up, work that makes people chuckle and definitely digs a good political draw. Someone once said that illustration shines a light. Erik Isakson is a commercial photographer who creates sports lifestyle imagery. He's based in Southern California, living just outside Los Angeles in Rancho Santa Margarita. His love for photography began when he was 11 years old with a Sports Illustrated subscription that included a free camera. Changing the plastic cameras f-stop’s from cloudy to partly cloudy, and even to the sunny setting was all the sophistication he needed to test it out the first time photographing Shamu on our family vacation. From there, as they say, the rest is history.
Having participated in sports and outdoor adventure throughout his life he naturally gravitated towards sports lifestyle imagery. It has always provided him with opportunities to challenge himself in new ways, creatively and technically. Whether photographing an NBA superstar with a five minute time limit or capturing a runner in full stride, each day as a photographer is exhilarating and satisfying.

Eli Meir Kaplan is a documentary-inspired lifestyle commercial photographer and director who became interested in visual media after his parents brought home an early black and white video camera when he was four years-old. Eli's first of many videos on the camera was a stop-motion battle between He-Man and Skeletor. A Batman and Robin caper soon followed.
Eli’s longstanding interest in visual storytelling and meeting people from different backgrounds led him to documentary photography. He draws from that experience to capture genuine, spontaneous, and intimate moments and emotionally compelling storytelling in the commercial photography and video production he does today.

Freda: Eric, congrats on the new grant to continue your pinhole series photographing artists! You mention that a literal pinhole of light entering the dark box is analogous to the genesis of an idea. I love that! I think it's so important right now given the increasing influence of AI. This work is literally the opposite of that!
Eric: Yes, totally! It's about enjoying the serendipity and unexpected elements in the creative process and really welcoming it. What's cool about pinhole is that it takes a long time to make an exposure. Like one of my portraits had an exposure time of 35 minutes.
Freda: 35 minutes is an incredibly long time for a single exposure. Sometimes we don't even get 35 minutes with the subject for an entire shoot!
Eric: I know right? This is what makes pinhole so great. The time it involves and how that time impacts the final image. What's cool is, while it's happening, while the shot is going on, I'm interacting with my subject. And they're interacting with the space that inspires them, and all this is happening almost like a film, but it's being captured and compressed on just this one piece of film. So you've got all this weird ghosting and overlaying of images.

Freda: Exactly, and that's not necessarily something that you can even try to control. You really have to know what you want and simply trust the process.
Eric: Yup - totally trusting in the process. What I learned over time was that I could try to direct that so that I had something to say about one of the artists and that's when it all started coming together and when the work started getting more traction in the fine art community.

Eric: Just the other day I posted one of my pinhole photos for World Photography Day. It features Risk, an old-school graffiti artist from Los Angeles. I happened to get him when he had just finished painting this mural for Sony. We were on a rooftop, but it wasn't the top of the building, but this whole wall probably three or four stories high next to him and I shot him in front of that. You don't see Risk's face in the shot. And that's what was cool about it. The shot captured him in front of his artwork, maintaining his anonymity.
Freda: Yes, your artistic decision here reflecting the secretive nature of graffiti art. The final image becoming a mirror where the artist can be seen in connection with the space that inspires them, and the work that defines them.
Eric: Exactly! The artists themselves are offering a temporal reflection of society through their works of art, and the pinhole camera records the artist, time, and this space in a challenging and unique manner asking us to consider things both inside and outside the frame - the artist’s life and work in space and time.
